Electrical Testing, Thermography & Power System Studies in the Maldives
Vibhawa Consultants is an independent, ISO 9001:2015-certified electrical engineering consultancy serving resorts, utilities and solar developers across the Maldives. We test, survey and model island electrical systems — we do not sell equipment or installation, so the only thing our findings protect is your resort, your guests and your uptime. Our engineers are a short flight from Colombo, without Australian or European day rates.
Proven across the Maldives
Cheval Blanc Randheli
The region’s largest open-sea floating solar project (3 MW, with SWIMSOL): design of the onshore and offshore substations, full ETAP modelling, protection co-ordination, relay testing, and testing & commissioning of the 11 kV and LV systems. 2022–2024.
Taj Exotica Resort & Spa
Five consecutive years of electrical safety audits, thermography and ETAP studies — including island-mode protection co-ordination of the entire resort distribution: 40 main and sub-main panels, 128 guest-room DBs, a 5+2 generator island grid.
Conrad Maldives Rangali Island
Electrical safety audit, infrared thermography and ETAP studies for the Hilton flagship.
Patina Maldives
Infrared thermography — condition monitoring in a live ultra-luxury environment.
“Testing was carried out with calibrated instruments, in compliance with IEC and BS standards — across electrical audits, thermography and ETAP studies.”
— Director of Engineering, Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Maldives
Island grids are not city grids
A Maldivian resort is its own power utility. Generators, floating or rooftop solar and battery storage run in island mode with no national grid behind them — so a protection mis-grade doesn’t just trip a breaker, it darkens the whole island. Salt-laden air attacks terminations and busbars years faster than inland plants. And every spare part is a seaplane or dhoni away, which makes finding the fault before it fails worth far more than repairing after.
This is exactly the work Vibhawa specialises in: condition monitoring, protection studies and verification testing for self-contained island networks.
The Resort Electrical Assurance Programme
A three-tier programme built specifically for Maldivian resorts. Each tier stands alone; together they give a resort a complete, evidence-based picture of its electrical risk.
Tier 1 — Infrared thermography survey
Non-intrusive thermal survey of live switchboards, busways, transformers, generator panels and solar PV — no shutdowns, no disturbed guests. Every anomaly classified by severity with recommended action and timeframe. We survey around 50 panels a day, planned with your engineering team around occupancy. Surveys are planned, executed and reviewed by certified thermographers (Level III and Level II, ISO 18436-7 / ASNT-aligned) — certification that satisfies insurers and brand EHS requirements. No routine checklist item catches a developing termination fault — thermography is the survey that sees the fault no checklist sees.
Tier 2 — Electrical safety audit
Periodic inspection and testing to BS 7671, aligned with Maldives Utility Regulatory Authority electrical installation standards and the items resort H&S audits actually check: powerhouse registration, panel covers and circuit directories, signage and lockout, fuel-tank bonding, earthing and lightning protection, emergency lighting test records. Inspection and testing proceeds at around 50 panels a day. Findings delivered as a C1/C2/C3-classified close-out register your engineering team can hand straight to brand, ministry or insurance auditors.
Tier 3 — ETAP island-mode power system study
A living ETAP model of your island network: load flow, short circuit, protection co-ordination and arc flash for generator/solar/BESS island grids. A typical resort-wide protection co-ordination and arc flash study runs around two weeks end to end — only the initial data capture happens on island; modelling and reporting are completed in Colombo. Selective protection means the nearest device trips, not the whole resort.
Beyond resorts
- Solar developers and EPCs — interconnection and protection studies, relay testing, and testing & commissioning of MV systems, proven on open-sea floating solar.
- Utilities and island powerhouses — transformer and switchgear testing, protection relay testing and programming, commissioning of new MV systems.
- Contractors — independent third-party testing and certification of your own installations, signed by Chartered Electrical Engineers.
Why Vibhawa
- Chartered Electrical Engineers lead every engagement — reports that stand up to utilities, insurers and authority scrutiny.
- Three certified thermographers in-house — one Level III (Infraspection Institute, USA) and two Level II.
- ISO 9001:2015 certified by SGS under UKAS accreditation (Certificate LK26/00000055, valid to 2029).
- Calibrated, industrial-grade instruments — relay test systems, CT/VT analysers, thermal imagers, power quality analysers.
- Digital reporting through WRENS — findings captured at the point of measurement, prioritised for action.
How we work in the Maldives
Engagements are scheduled in the island weather windows (October–November and May–June) and clustered by atoll so neighbouring resorts share mobilisation. Site work is compact — survey and data capture on island, modelling and reporting completed in Colombo — which keeps on-island time, guest disruption and cost to a minimum. For groups, we build multi-property programmes with year-on-year trending against each property’s baseline.
Frequently asked questions
Yes — thermography and most audit work is performed on live systems, planned with your engineering team around guest activity. This is our core sector in Sri Lanka and the Maldives alike.
Thermography and electrical testing move at around 50 panels a day, so most resorts are covered in a few days on island. A resort-wide ETAP protection co-ordination and arc flash study takes about two weeks, with most of the work done off-island in Colombo.
Yes. Island-mode ETAP studies are a core service — including the region’s largest open-sea floating solar project and a 5+2 generator resort island grid.
Our thermography certifications (ISO 18436-7, ASNT-aligned) and BS 7671 audit format with C1/C2/C3 classification are built for exactly that use.
We are based in Colombo — a short flight from Malé — and cluster visits by atoll. Share your requirement and preferred window and we respond with a clear scope and quotation.
